Vera’s doll died a week after her grandma. Like granny, Annie too lost all her hair, in clumps, and turned blue. Vera cried for hours that day. They all said it was shock; the broken doll after all was a gift from her grandma. Vera held on to Annie’s brittle, bony hand all day. Then through the tears she smiled. Brushing her tear soaked hair out of her face, she told her favourite doll the funniest jokes she knew and her most loved stories, each punctured by a series of teary hiccups. When it was dinner time and she had to let go, Vera kissed Annie on her cheek and told her how much she loved her.
“I’ll miss you so much,” she whispered.
“I’ll miss you too,” replied granny.
